A Valentines Day Themed Netflix Streaming Guide!
There are a lot of romance movies out there in the Netflix world. Use this guide to wade through them all and pick the right one for your evening, whether it’s being spent with a loved one or by yourself.
There are plenty of options for your Valentines Day viewing streaming on Netflix. And with all of the money you have probably already sunk into this crazy evening, a good free movie has to sound pretty good by now. Well here is our list that should cover a range for you from Rom-Com to Drama, Classic, Foreign and even a good section for those of you celebrating Single Awareness Day. Here are my picks for V-Day.
Lost in Translation: For those of you bitter and alone and don’t want to cheer up but just want to be hypnotized. Lost in Translation is so slow and feel so isolated that you really to feel hypnotized and lost, yet at the same time it is a really engaging movie, full of great characters and funny moments. For a bonus, if you really want to hit the jackpot on Valentine’s Day movies go find a copy of “Love Stinks.” It’s a bit cheesy and miscast, but you will love it. Don’t ask any questions, just go find it now!
Say Anything: Cameron Crowe’s first movie is delightful in it’s heart, it’s fun and it’s sincerity. I suppose it shouldn’t be a surprise that this is the one movie both Steve and I mention, having both grown up in the 80’s. This movie really doesn’t feel like it is pretending to be anything. It is just an engaging look at a young romance in all of it’s beauty, destruction, fun and grace.
Guy Thing/13 Going on 30: This one is simple. Maybe your spouse or “other” is away at work or class or whatever on Valentines, and you are still in the mood for a good Rom-Com, I have you covered. If you are a guy, watch a guy thing. If you are a girl, watch 13 Going on 30. It’s that simple. Comfort movies for being separately attached.
Amelie: Let’s just say it up front, it is a great movie and you will get extra credit with the lover. And we know you could use it. You probably have a flower and/or dinner thing going on tonight, right? Yea, every guy does. Watch a foreign film in French, the love language. And bonus points aside, it is a fantastic film. You will laugh, you will feel warm and you will feel inspired. Amelie is great entertainment and great art.
The Artist: This movie does exactly what a good movie is supposed to do and it does it well. It makes you feel. I know it is intimidating watching a silent film, but trust me, five to ten minutes in you will forget. And don’t let silent or black and white fool you into boring. No, no, this movie is a roller coaster. It takes you back to another era where you want to cheer for the hero, boo the villain and gasp when you see what is behind the door. And you should! Let this movie soak in and don’t be afraid to let it draw you in. Shout at the TV when you see the hero walking into a trap! Laugh as hard as you can! Don’t be afraid to cry! And when good triumphs, jump out of your seat and dance! You see a great element of this film is letting go of your inhibitions and enjoying the ride.
Doing the How to Get to 2nd Base for $1 on the podcast really puts the pressure on for picking a truly great romance movie. There are plenty of great choices on Netflix and a few that I have on my ‘to see’ list. But these ones are movies I’ve seen. Movies with the right amount of romance, comedy and more romance. Because let’s be honest. You want to get to 2nd Base. Or at least get a good cry out.
I Give It A Year: This is the romantic comedy about realizing you were in the wrong relationship and the right person was in front of you the whole time. Well done.
Say Anything: This classic will have Peter Gabriel stuck in your head. And is a great 80’s movie to end off the decade. Who doesn’t like story of the guy dating the girl even though her dad disagrees? It’s been done numerous times before and since but never has a boom box been held so high.
Upside Down: I wish my love would cause an interplanetary incident. While the love story has the same base as many, he is from an underprivileged place and she is a high uppity affluent individual, the fact that they are some opposing planets with opposite gravities makes for a great Sci Fi idea to top it off. Very well done film.
She’s All That: This is really just because I had somewhat of a crush on Rachel Leigh Cook back in the 90’s. This movie, along with every other teen romance in the 90’s, is the jock playing out a bet on the nerdy girl only to end up falling in love. A young Paul Walker, in one of his first movies, plays the ‘bad guy’. If you just want to reminisce on high school days this is the one for you.
What Women Want: No not the Mel Gibson one. The Andy Lau one. Never heard of it? Well to mix up the list I picked something on the international side. This is the Chinese version of the US movie with the same name. If you don’t mind subtitles I found this to be hilarious. If you’ve seen What Women Want (US) I definitely suggest trying this version out. Same story, different country.
