It’s a holiday created by a conglomerate of the greeting card, chocolate and flower companies.
And sorry but unless you have a signed and notarized legal document from your significant other stating they disavow any celebration of Valentines Day – you better have a plan.
Here are a few ideas outside of the norm to help your cause this V-Day.
Cook. It’s not near as hard as it sounds. And if you’ve watched any Food network late at night you’ve picked up a few things. But let me share two recipes with you that will completely knock her socks off (and possibly more).
1. Chocolate Covered Strawberries.
DO NOT pay for half a dozen of these. Waste of money. And you do not have to get fancy. By all means if you are going through pastry school or do painting as a late night hobby then decorate these puppies. But for the regular guy simple chocolate and strawberries will suffice. Here is our ingredient list:
- Strawberries (one package)
- Milk Chocolate Chips (one package – 16 oz package)
- Shortening (2 tablespoons)
In a double boiler. Wait. You don’t know what a double boiler is? That’s OK. Your kitchen has a couple of pots and pans right?. Well here is the trick.
Take one of your pots and fill it 1/3 up with tap water. Take a metal bowl – or in a pinch just a smaller pot – and place it on the water. Then start that water boiling.
Now take those strawberries, washed of course (cold water no soap – lets not be silly), and hold them by their leaves. Dip and roll them in chocolate and Put the chocolate chips and shortening in the double boiler. Constantly stir the chocolate and as the water boils it will evenly melt.
I won’t go into tricks to keep that from happening. Baby steps.
2. Cheese Fondue
This ooey gooey awesomeness is a meal of pure genius to whoever created it. Dip into this whatever you want. Go simple with sourdough bread or up your game by grilling a steak. Use your imagination. Here are a few ideas:
- Bread – sourdough, rye, french, all good options
- Grilled chicken or steak
Remember imagination. What do you like to dip into cheese? Tortilla chips? Do it. Pick 4 or 5 things so you don’t over do it.
Now the ingredients for the cheese itself:
- 1/2 Lb. Swiss Cheese (I suggest Emmenthaler) shredded
- 1/2 Lb. Gruyere Cheese shredded
- 2 Tablespoons flour
- 1 Garlic Clove cut in half
- 1 Cup Dry White Wine (I suggest Sauvignon Blanc)
- 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
OK first things first. You can find those cheese in your grocery deli section. With the fresh blue cheese and all those other fancy things you never get. And by the way this isn’t cheap cheese so be prepared.
Next toss the cheese and flour into a large ziploc bag and shake. You want the cheese coated in the flour.
Grab a large pot and rub the garlic all over the inside of it. Heat it on a medium-low setting and add the wine. Once it starts simmering add the cheese a little at a time. Constantly stirring in a zig zag pattern as you add the cheese.
Once the cheese is all added and smooth add the mustard to it and remove from the heat. Transfer the cheese to a fondue pot and arrange your dipping utensils around it. Let the cheese fest begin.

Not ready to test your kitchen skills? Here are a few ideas from 12a that should still get you on her good side.
1. Movie in a Park
OK you don’t need to go to a park. Your backyard will suffice. And guess what? You can do this off your laptop. Or if you wanna go big drag a battery, inverter, DVD player and large TV to a park. Have it setup before hand. Pop some Jiffy pop over a can of Sterno and you are uber romantic.
But seriously. Instead of a Red Box movie in your living room just moving it to the back yard is a great romantic idea. Stars, blanket for the cold weather, and some popcorn. Good movie cuddle time.
2. Take her to lunch.
Don’t knock this one just yet. Think about it. Everyone is going to be doing dinner, movie, flowers, blah blah blah for Valentines Day. You will be the only guy taking her to lunch. But don’t stop there. Pick her up from work/school with flowers. Take her to her favorite lunch spot. No need to go expensive here. And then…
If you are really good talk to her boss or whoever and get her out of work/school for the afternoon. Go to a park for a walk. Think ice cream cone and just talking. Melts a girls heart.
Then add to it the evening. Do the movie in a park idea from above. Make cheese fondue.
Turn it into an all day event. Pick her up at work, have flowers, walk in a park, cheese fondue. This is stuff she will be talking to her friends about the next day.
The end goal is to be different. You don’t want to be in the same boat as every other guy. You want to stand out so she has something to talk to her friends about. If she can brag about what you did then you did a good job. Good luck!
