Here we are, back again for our Christmas viewing guide for Netflix Streaming, 2013! Last year we found holiday movies difficult to search for and browse on Netflix so we began our holiday guides. We do our best to make these guides as exhaustive and organized as possible as well as give you some recommendations for a quick pick to turn on. We hope you enjoy the list and let us know what you are watching!
Those of you who know me know that the Christmas holiday time isn’t necessarily my favorite holiday time. That being said there are a few movies that I enjoy watching this time of year. And lucky for me these ones are also available on Netflix.
Obviously anything from the classics list below is a great choice, but I thought I would focus on lesser known movies so that you can find a hidden gem for your holiday viewing!
I cannot personally vouch for this movie but it sounds right up my alley. I like a movie where characters stories intersect, even if they don’t realize it. How the choices you make can affect someone else in life. Midnight Clear is the store five small town residents lonely and depressed on Christmas Eve. And how they find hope when their lives intersect with each other. My hope for this movie is that I will walk away and think about how my actions affect the person next to me. Which shouldn’t we all be considering during the holiday season anyways?
White Christmas is just a classic you can’t go wrong with. Typical story line for movies of this age with the two buddies, one more of the comedic and the other the serious singer (see: Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis though this is Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye) they fall for some girls and follow them to a lodge where they end up saving their old war commander. It’s a feel good movie where the story could get told in 25 minutes if not for the singing through out. But hey this is from 1954.
This isn’t going to be the most riveting or enlightening documentary you watch this year, but it’s still a fun ride. Jack Sanderson decides to become a Santa Claus to bring more meaning to his life. Watch him as he makes changes, goes to “Santa School,” meets up with other Santas and begins playing Santa in parades and meets with kids who are excited to see The Claus in real life. The best part of this movie is hearing guys who play Santa every year talk about what it means to them and how it affects their lives.
Christian movies suck, let’s just be honest. I originally watched this movie for a good laugh, I mean seriously, look at the title! A Christian movie with this title has to be good MST300 material, right? It was actually a decent movie. Not too preachy and a decent, honest story.
I’ve never seen this movie but like Mark-Paul Gosselaar so it popped up on my radar this year. A girl (Amy Smart) gets set up on a blind date Christmas Eve and then gets 12 chances to do it right. Looks like a typical romance comedy. But I’ll give it a shot. Just don’t tell the guys.
It’s a guaranteed laugh because it has the Madagascar penguins and Donkey from Shrek. At least for me. This is actually five episodes, all holiday themed, and all including characters from great DreamWorks movies.
Think Groundhogs Day without Bill Murray, told as a Liftetime movie (where no women are beaten) with a Christmas twist. It is everything you would expect from a made for TV movie with all of the cheese and ridiculousness. But it’s fun! And it has Amy Smart and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack, Saved By the Bell) in it. Pour a glass of wine, set aside your man card and make sure Facebook is disconnected from your Netflix feed and just enjoy the movie. I won’t tell anybody, I promise!
Before there was Bean, there was Black Adder. Rowen Atkinson is a brilliant comedian, and written in part by Richard Curtis, one of the great screen British screenwriters (Love Actually, Bridgett Jones’ Diary, About Time)
First foremost and always is Love Actually. My wife and I traditionally watch this movie over the holiday season together. The tradition started before we were married. The ensemble cast is great. The different romances. The somewhat intertwining stories. And good ol’ humor. I mean who takes the job as a stand in for porn movies? The childlike love and typical running in the packed airport through security also included. And probably what I love the most is not everyone’s ending is a happy one. Some times things need to be worked out. But Love Actually is all around us.
If you are one of the rare few who has not seen this you must watch it.
And finally one not on Netflix. Which I know defeats the purpose but it has to be said. Christmas Comes to Willow Creek. If nothing else I have hopes that Jeff will watch this. I should probably just buy it for him for Christmas seeing that it’s still not streaming anywhere that I can find.
Enjoy your wrapping gifts, hanging lights and family adventures. Here’s to drinking lots of eggnog!
A Norwegian horror film that focuses on the darker traditions of Santa. A group of Americans have dug up the grave of the original Santa and now the children in the village are missing and other strange things are going on. I will warn you though, when old dead men are dug up you do get a glimpse of some old men penises. Just warning you. My favorite part of the movie is when the villagers surround Santa with dynamite and one guy says, “You’re about to find out how Santa can be in many places at one time.” If you don’t think that’s the funniest thing you have heard all holiday season, don’t bother. If you laughed as hard as I did, this movie is a gem!
Whether you are popping in a movie to help inspire you through the agony of wrapping gifts, sitting down for a pajama party with your kids or just enjoying some holiday cheer to brighten your spirits after a crummy day at work, here is the guide to the best holiday movies on Netflix, enjoy!
