The below journal entries are from voice notes I kept on my phone as my first day at Phoenix Comicon progressed. If available I’ve included a picture of what happened. Enjoy Comicon through the eyes of a noob.
9:42AM : I am running way later than I wanted. Lucas wasn’t work with me on the whole getting ready process. Also picked up Chex Mix, water and gum from Walmart to keep myself fueled.
10:17AM : Parked on the fourth floor of the parking garage. Pretty empty. Which is a good sign. Making my way across the street. Following a couple wearing Star Wars shirts. Hopefully they know where they are going.
10:34AM : Bummer. I got my pass but was late to the Walter Koenig morning panel. Thought it would be interesting even though I’m not a big Star Trek fan. Next room over was ‘Experiencing Comicon’. Found a seat.
11:35AM : Worth going. Guys who led the ‘Experiencing Comicon’ panel were funny. Too bad I won’t be able to stay the whole weekend. A lot of good parties going on I learned. Also note to self be more vocal next time. They were giving away all kinds of prizes to people.
12:10PM : Cannot believe it’s already middle of the day. Just finished exploring the convention center. First floor, second floor and the exhibition hall. Feel like I know my way around. Ran into a lot of great characters.
It’s amazing how creative people are with their costumes. Ran into some Spawn girls. Both creepy and hot. Took a lot of pictures. Too many to post. May have to create an album.
The front of the convention center had a parking lot with cars from movies and TV shows.
Ghostbusters, Jurassic Park, Cars – very cool. I really wanted to drive the Jurassic Park jeep.
1:20PM : Spent the whole time exploring the exhibitor area. Wow. The Mos Eisley cantina area was way cool. The R2D2 builders club. The steam punk.
So many awesome shirts and posters. Collectible items. And the comic artists. It was great being able to watch some of them draw live and create. Something for everyone. Star Wars, Zombie, cartoon, new, old. You name it.
2:30PM : Didn’t spend the whole hour in the Michael Rooker panel. It was cool to experience. The intro, Q&A, but he didn’t seem that into the audience. Love the show but he wasn’t keeping my attention. Time to explore the west hall.
2:52PM : Only at Comicon. I’ve seen plenty of skin with some of these costumes. But I ran into this couple. One dressed in a skimpy Street Fighter looking costume. Ass pretty much hanging out. And the other dressed as Master Chief from Halo. Master Chief was getting more pictures than her! It was hilarious. She was standing off to the side while he kept getting stopped by people to take their pictures with him! I should have snapped a shot myself.
3:47PM : Heading back to exhibitor hall. Forgot I have one of my brother’s Timothy Zahn Star Wars books. Going to see if he will sign it. I did check out the west hall area. They have an arcade setup with tons of gaming.
A childrens area with art/craft stuff and a guy was dressed as the pied piper quoting the entire story – while playing his pipe!Really neat to see the kids area making the event family friendly. They even have a ‘Make A Wand’ Harry Potter thing going on later.
Oh and the best thing may be the LARP I sat in on for awhile. There is a local group that puts on these Live Action Role Playing events. They were dressed in full costume with swords and all.
The swords were covered with a foam batting. They were hard core going at it when sword fighting. The hits sounded legit. I will admit it was interesting learning how they go about doing spell casting, using potions, etc during a LARP. I ducked out before I got volunteered to try anything though.
4:30PM : Heading over to see Tarantino panel that Stephen Mooney is part of. Not a huge Tarantino fan but Stephen is part of the Four Eyed Radio Network we are on. I told him I would take some pictures and video with my D90.
5:10PM : Left early. Interesting panel. Makes me want to watch more Tarantino. But there is a Star Trek Continues premiere episode going on and I want to make sure I find a seat. Not sure how busy it may be for the screening. Glad I did though. Made it to the end of Nichelle Nickols panel. Unlike Rooker she was amazing. At least at the end. She was really involved in the audience. Moving around the stage. Answering questions. Even sang at one point. You could tell she embraced this following of fans and appreciated them.
8:10PM : Star Trek Continues was awesome! Check out my write up here.
Ran into friends Joel and Robyn who were in line for the Awesome Hour with Wil Wheaton. Decided to make a run for the truck. Backup battery died. Going to relax in the truck and let it charge. Rest my feet. Trying to decide if I want to check out the Zombie Catwalk thing going on later tonight.
10:30PM : On my way home. Didn’t make it to the Zombie Catwalk thing. Started exploring the hotels that had stuff going on. Started heading back to the convention center when I ran into a packed street. Took awhile to realize what was happening. Zombie Walk. Actually before they started someone proposed to his girlfriend with the whole crowd watching. The Ghostbuster car led the way for the walk. They also have the Zombie defense guys walking to keep the zombies in line. Everyone was enjoying themselves.
I don’t know what to wrap up on. I am officially in love with everything Comicon. I wish I could have done more. You really have to be ok with the fact it is impossible to see everything you want to see. Also, mental note, they close down the exhibitor hall at like 8:00pm. I couldn’t get back to buy some comic books for Lucas.
The only thing I may changed about the day was spending more time with the exhibits. There was so much to see. Next year I have to go for the whole four day event.
Which means right now I need to start convincing my wife.
And planning a cool costume for me and Lucas. I’m thinking him as Yoda and me as Luke. Carrying him on my back.
